About Us
Brief History
Het Surinaams Knutselhoekje (HSKH) officially started in 2020 with the aim of addressing educational disparities in Suriname, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Since then, HSKH has been dedicated to providing quality STEM education to youth across the country. Through hands-on workshops, engaging clubs, and impactful projects, HSKH has empowered thousands of children and inspired a passion for STEM. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach, serving communities in Paramaribo, Para, and Nickerie, and has been instrumental in promoting STEM education among underrepresented groups.
Founder's Story
Cherelys Dwarka Sing, the visionary founder of Het Surinaams Knutselhoekje (HSKH), is a software engineer and social entrepreneur who has been at the forefront of addressing social challenges in Suriname since the age of 18. Her journey began with a mission to reduce school dropouts and indecision about educational paths, which led to the creation of a groundbreaking school app that earned her the “Best Young Entrepreneur Idea” award in 2016. Cherelys’ unwavering commitment to education and youth empowerment has garnered her prestigious fellowships from global organizations such as YLAI, UNESCO, TECHGirls, the US Embassy Paramaribo, and the Orange Knowledge Programme – Nuffic. These experiences, coupled with her passion for fostering youth development, inspired her to establish HSKH, where she continues to lead initiatives that focus on STEM education. Her work empowers tribal and Indigenous youth, while also providing girls in Suriname with opportunities to thrive in technology and engineering fields.
The HSKH Team
At Het Surinaams Knutselhoekje (HSKH), we are proud to have an all-female board driving our vision forward. Our leadership team is deeply committed to creating impactful educational experiences, especially for underrepresented youth in Suriname. Each board member brings a unique perspective and passion for empowering young minds, particularly through STEM education. Our team consists of a dedicated group of volunteers, including students and professionals working in STEM fields. We believe strongly in the power of peer-to-peer education, where knowledge is shared among peers to inspire, motivate, and build a community of learners. This collaborative approach allows our students to engage with real-world concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while learning from individuals who are passionate about the same subjects. Together, our board and volunteer team work tirelessly to create an environment where innovation, curiosity, and growth are at the heart of everything we do, making a lasting difference in the lives of the next generation of STEM leaders in Suriname.
Core Values
Inclusivity
We believe in providing equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their background, gender, or socio-economic status. Our programs are designed to be accessible and welcoming to everyone.
Innovation
We strive to foster creativity and innovation in our educational approaches, encouraging students to think critically and solve real-world problems through STEM.
Community
We are committed to building strong, supportive communities. Through our programs, we engage with local schools, organizations, and families to create a collaborative environment that nurtures growth and learning.
Empowerment
We aim to empower youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
Our Clubs
Our STEM Club encourages curiosity and exploration in various STEM fields. Through interactive workshops and activities, participants engage in science experiments, engineering challenges, and mathematical puzzles. The objective is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of STEM subjects, nurturing problem-solving skills and creativity. The club provides a collaborative environment where students can learn from each other and gain confidence in their abilities.
The Code Club focuses on teaching programming and computational thinking. Participants learn to code through fun and engaging workshops that cover languages such as Python, Scratch, and HTML/CSS, as well as Arduino programming. The club aims to equip students with the skills needed to create their own software applications, websites, and electronics projects. By emphasizing logical thinking and algorithmic problem-solving, the Code Club prepares students for the digital world and future careers in technology.
The Robotics Club offers hands-on projects and competitions that immerse participants in the world of robotics and engineering. Students design, build, and program robots using kits like LEGO and VEX Robotics. The club fosters teamwork, creativity, and technical skills as participants work together to solve complex challenges and compete in local and regional robotics competitions. The Robotics Club inspires students to pursue careers in engineering and technology by providing practical experience and a platform to showcase their talents.
